At first, I thought the Iranian president was just going for the tried and tested method of finding a common enemy to unite his people. It's nothing new, presidents all around do that every once in a while. But now I think he actually might be serious:

Iran president stands by Israel remarks
By Parisa Hafezi
TEHRAN (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, cheered by thousands of supporters, signalled on Friday he stood by his call for Israel to be wiped off the map, while Iran's foreign ministry sought to defuse a diplomatic storm.

Scary. And, of course, the perfect excuse for the USA's tactical nukes.

Addendum: This Iranian blogger says:

I have to say he doesn't represent the way the majority in Iran think. This guy is a fraud and is a puppet of Mesbah-e Yazdi, a radical cleric who is only gaining power after Khomeini's death.

And:

Ahmadinejad is an indirect result of America's policy shift against the reformists in Iran. Maybe they wanted this in the first place? Who knows.
